Panthers Beyond PHS: Abigail King

For Abigail King, Pleasantville High School wasn't defined by one club, one class, or one activity. Instead, it was the combination of experiences that helped shape the person she is today.  

Rather than following a single path, she embraced a wide range of opportunities that challenged her, broadened her perspective, and helped shape her future. 

"At PHS, I discovered a passion for writing, leadership, and service. Through projects like my Girl Scout Gold Award and involvement in student organizations, I realized how much I enjoy creating opportunities that help others build confidence and succeed."  

Her experiences inside and outside the classroom helped her grow as a leader, collaborator, and communicator. 

"There wasn't just one experience—it was the combination of everything I was involved in. English Honor Society, Student Newspaper, Model UN, Sources of Strength, Peer Leadership, field hockey, and my Girl Scout Gold Award all challenged me in different ways. They taught me how to lead, collaborate, think critically, and use my voice to make a positive impact in my community."  

Abigail says Pleasantville High School also gave her the confidence to embrace new opportunities. 

"Pleasantville High School encouraged me to step outside of my comfort zone and take on leadership opportunities. It taught me resilience, time management, and the importance of giving back to others. Those experiences have given me the confidence to pursue ambitious goals in college and beyond."  

She credits Mrs. Van Tassell with making a lasting impact on her journey. 

This fall, Abigail will attend Gettysburg College as a Presidential Scholar, majoring in English and on the pre-law track. After college, she hopes to join the Peace Corps before attending law school to help and advocate for others. Looking ahead, she hopes to study abroad, gaining a broader understanding of other cultures and perspectives that will complement her interest in international service through the Peace Corps. She's also looking forward to challenging herself, meeting new people, building meaningful relationships with professors and classmates, and discovering where this next chapter takes her. 

Looking back on her time at PHS, one lesson stands above the rest: 

"Growth happens when you're willing to take risks and embrace challenges. Some of my most rewarding experiences came from stepping outside my comfort zone."  

Her advice for younger Panthers is simple: 

"Don't be afraid to get involved. Join clubs, try new activities, ask questions, and take chances, even if they seem intimidating. High school goes by much faster than you expect, so make the most of every opportunity and don't let fear stop you from discovering what you're capable of."
